Is your Dog Bored with his Toys? Try a Weekly Rotation Scheme and Bring Back life to your Dog's Old Toys

As a dog owner you know that dogs, and especially puppies, need a lot of dog toys to play with. You did your research and you’ve bought all the right stuff – your dog has everything from squeaky toys, fluffy toys, chewy Kongs and interactive brain games. In short you have a small pet store in your house, but your dog is still bored.

This is all despite the fact that you had been promised by pet shops and toy manufacturers that their dog toys may be pricey, but they are guaranteed to keep your puppy not only activated but also mentally stimulated. And still, your dog decides that it is a good idea to chew your shoes or gnaw your furniture. Sound familiar?

A spoiled dog could be a bored dog

The fact is most dogs and puppies are more than a little spoiled and have toys in all shapes and sizes all over the house - and still they get bored and start thinking of their own projects, which usually involves chewing your stuff. So what can you do to make your dog less bored and interested in his toys again?

The solution is simple – never give your dog the chance to get bored with a toy. As an example, imagine you were confined in your house but not allowed to touch anything. If I were to give you a tennis ball to play with today, you could probably entertain yourself with the ball for five, ten minutes or so.

You might even invite some friends over to play some games with the ball, but no matter how good quality or how expensive that ball was, the fun factor will be exhausted in a couple of hours and you would probably try and steal some books or watch a movie to entertain yourself (even if you knew it wasn’t allowed!).

Tomorrow you won’t even bother looking at the ball. But if I had given you the ball in the morning, followed by a newspaper at midday and a computer game in the evening you would have had way more fun the whole day.

Imagine then, that I took away your toys that evening and continued with the same procedure the following day but with new toys? No chance of getting bored.

Action Plan - Dog Toy Rotation

Your dog is just as likely to get bored with his toys. If he sees the same dog toys out every day in the same places around the house they loose their wow factor and he will undoubtedly get bored with them.

The solution is simple - just follow these steps and your dog will never have time to get bored with his toys again!

Action Plan - Dog Toy Rotation

  1. Tidy up and remove all your dogs toys from the floor. Don’t leave any toys out.
  2. Organise your dogs toys into 7 piles – make sure that you include some of his favourite toys in each pile.
  3. Find 7 suitable containers for all the toys and label them Monday – Sunday.
  4. Each morning, midday and evening give your dog one new toy from that day’s collection.
  5. In the evening tidy away all toys and start from scratch again the following day.

Your dog will never get bored again - and your house will look tidier too!

Hi Steph and thanks for your comment! Agree - peanut butter toys rock, and keeps those teeth off other things like furniture! :-) We always bring a ball for walkies too...

Very interesting Hub, I am a mean old mum, my dog has his toys in a plastic box, up out of his way most of the time. I only leave a couple of kong toys out for him, sometimes with a little peanut butter inside during the day. Balls are taken out with us for walks, and he has a strong rubber ring that comes out of the box to play tug once a day. You are right, leaving the toys littered around the house does cause your dog to become bored with them, and it makes the house look untidy. Toby is a lot happier now that I have cleaned up his act.
