Alcohol Stains

Sponge the stain with warm water and then wash you clothes as usual.

Blood Stains

Removing blood stains needn’t be a hurdle. Simply soak the stained fabric in cold water and add some salt. Then rub the stain with soap or washing powder and cold water and finally wash the fabric as usual.

Blueberry Stains

Getting rid of blueberry stains can be tricky business and you need to act fast. Blueberries contain tannin and can cause some real nasty looking stains unless treated immediately. You should never use bar soap to remove Blueberry stains as the soap will cause the stain to stick.

Fresh Blueberry stains can often be treated by laundering the garment in the hottest temperature recommended for the fabric. An alternative old housewife tips is to soak the garment in buttermilk for a while and then wash as usual.

Chocolate Stains

Chocoholics know that chocolate easily crumbles and leave stains where you least expect it. Luckily, removing chocolate stains is pretty straight forward. Start of by scraping of as much as possible of any remaining chocolate. Then, soak the garment in hot water and wash on as high temperature as is recommended for the fabric using Biological washing powder which contains both bleach and enzymes to help remove the stain.

Chewing Gum Stains

Getting a chewing gum caught in your favourite pair of trousers is sticky business, luckily its quite easily sorted.Put the stained garment in a plastic bag and place in the freezer for an hour. Break of the frozen chewing gum. Wash as usual.

Coffe and Tea Stains

This is an old housewife tip for removing coffe or tea stains. Soak the stained garment in cold water straight away. If the stain has dried, then dip the stained part of the garment in boiling water (if the fabric can take the temperature). Then wash using a washing powder containing bleach.

Fat Stains

Fat stains look really horrible and need to be treated immediately. Wash the garment in your washing machine as per usual – on the highest temperature recommended for the fabric type. If the stain doesn’t go away, then treat it with some really good washing up liquid such as Fairy and then put the garment back in the washing machine.

Fruit Stains

Removing Fruit stains is easy if you follow this advice. As soon as the stain happens, rinse the garment immediately in cold water. Then wash the garment using a biological laundry detergent which contains both bleach and enzymes for stain removal. If the stain is dried in, treat it with a mix of equal parts glycerine and water and then launder as per usual.

Grass Stains

Grass stains can be tricky business. They contain a mixture of protein and other organic matter, mixed up with grasses’ juices making the stain nice and green.

Use a Biological washing powder which includes both bleach and enzymes to work on the tough grass stains. Scrub the detergent into the stain and leave for fifteen minutes before laundering the garment as normal.

Ketchup Stains

Mix equal parts glycerine and warm water and soak the garment for an hour. Then wash as usual using a Biological washing powder.

Glue Stains

Use nail varnish remover that doesn’t contain any oil and carefully dab the stain way.

Ink Stains

Ink stains usually looks worse than they actually are – unless you’ve spilled some permanent ink of course! Here are a couple of fool proof methods for removing ink stains.

  • Use Bleach to remove ink stains on white clothes – then wash as usual
  • Aerosel Hairspray is tough on ink stains and might even get rid of permanent ink stains if you don’t leave it for too long. Spray some hairspray on the ink stain and wait a few minutes. Then rub the stain out using a warm wet paper towel.
  • Rubbing Alcohol can remove the ink stain if it has just happened. However, ink stain older than a few hours won’t go away using this method.
  • Try some soap detergent, warm water and a pinch of salt to get the stain out. Soak the stain and rub it out using a paper towel.

Jam Stains

Wash the garment as quickly as possible using a washing powder that includes bleach.

Lipstick Stains

Lipstick stains are removed by hand wash, using a liquid washing detergent. Then launder as usual.

Mascara Stains

Mascara stains can be removed by hand wash using a liquid washing detergent. Then launder as usual.

Milk and Cream Stains

To get rid of smelly milk or cream stains, soak the garment in Borax solution before you launder it as usual.

Nail Varnish Stains

Treat the nail varnish stain from the other side of the fabric using an oil free nail varnish remover. (If your garment is made from acetat or triacetat don’t use this method) Then wash as usual.

Oil and Greasy Stains

The sooner you deal with a greasy or oily stain the better. Add an absorbent like cornstarch or talcum powder to the affected area and then brush away. Then rub the stain with some Biological washing powder/liquid and wash in the hottest water that is OK for the fabric.

Red Wine Stains

There are many methods to get rid of red wine stains. Soak the stain in white wine. Alternatively, salt or potato flower can absorb the stain if applied when the stain is still wet. Then rub the stain with lemon and wash as usual using bleach if the fabric can handle it.

Shoe Polish

To get rid of shoe polish stains, rub the stain with liquid washing detergent and wash immediately.

Tomato Sauce Stains

Mix equal parts glycerine and warm water and soak the garment for an hour. Then wash as usual using a Biological washing powder.
